Im Namen Allāhs, des Allerbarmers, des Barmherzigen! "Wahrlich, Wir haben dir die Überfülle gegeben. (108:1) Darum bete zu deinem Herrn und schlachte (Opfertiere). (108:2) Wahrlich, der dich hasst, ist es, der (vom Segen der Nachkommenschaft) abgeschnitten ist. (108:3)" Dies ist die kürzeste Sura des Qur'ān und besteht ganz prägnant aus drei Versen wie Sura 103 und 110, hat aber die wenigsten Worte. Sie wurde offenbart, als die Feinde des Islam und die Widersacher des Propheten Muḥammad, Allāhs Segen und Friede auf ihm, versuchten, die Verbreitung des Islam in Makka zu verhindern. Zu ihnen gehörten vor allem Al-'Āṣ Ibn Wā'il, Abū Lahab und Abū Ǧahl. Als die männlichen Kinder des Propheten Muḥammad, Allāhs Segen und Friede auf ihm, gestorben waren, nahmen seine Gegner dies zum Anlaß, den Propheten und den Islam zu verspotten, indem sie verkündeten, Muḥammad sei ohne Nachkommen, also sozusagen von männlichen Erben abgeschnitten. Einer von ihnen behauptete sogar, so würde auch die Botschaft des Propheten sterben und die ganze Angelegenheit in Vergessenheit geraten. Um den Propheten in dieser schweren Situation zu stärken, offenbarte Allāh (t) diese Sura. Im ersten Vers weist Allāh (t) auf Seine Großzügigkeit und Gnade hin, der Prophet soll nicht traurig sein über den Tod seiner Söhne; denn Allāh (t) hat ihm etwas gegeben, was alle Zeiten überdauert, was im arabischen Text mit "Al-Kauṯar" bezeichnet wird. In vielen Ḥadīṯen wird überliefert, dass "Al- Kauṯar" der Name eines Flusses im Paradies sei. Nachdem Allāh (t) die Unermesslichkeit Seiner Gnadenfülle dargelegt hat, weist Er im folgenden Vers darauf hin, dass als Zeichen der Dankbarkeit und des demütigen Gehorsams, die Gebete und die Opfergaben allein nur für Ihn verrichtet werden dürfen. Im weiteren Sinne bedeutet "abtar" "ohne Nachkommen" und schließlich ganz allgemein abgeschnitten von allem Segen und Wohl im Diesseits und im Jenseits.
