Usama Ibn Zayd war der Sohn von Zaid Ibn Harithah (r), den der Prophet (s) sehr liebte. Er wurde aufgrund der Aussage des Propheten (s) „Ich bezeuge euch, dass Zaid mein Sohn ist, der von mir erbt und ich von ihm" Zaid Ibn Muhammad genannt bis die Adoption von Kindern durch den Koran verboten wurde. Seine Mutter war Um Aiman, die Dienerin und das Kindermädchen des Propheten (s). Nicht nur sein Vater, sondern auch Usama wurde vom Propheten (s) sehr geliebt; er wurde von den Sahaba (r) deshalb auch als „geliebter Sohn des Geliebten" gerufen. Es war nicht nur die Verwandtschaft zum Geliebten des Propheten (s), Zaid Ibn Harithah (r), die das Herz und die Nähe des Propheten (s) gewinnen ließen, sondern auch die hervorragende Eigenschaften dieser heranwachsenden islamischen Persönlichkeit. Als der Prophet (s) für die Schlacht von Uhud die Kämpfer unter den Sahaba (r) auswählte, schickte er (s) jene, die zu klein und zu jung waren, nach Hause. Neben Abdullah Ibn Umar und Zaid Ibn Thabit war auch Usama Ibn Zaid unter ihnen. Sie entfernten sich weinend von der islamischen Armee. Als Muhammad (s) nach einer kurzen Zeit erneut Kämpfer auswählte, und zwar für die Grabenschlacht, stellte sich Usama Ibn Zaid erneut auf. Als der Prophet (s) an den Gefährten vorbei ging, stellte sich Usama auf die Zehen, um sich größer zu machen. Der Prophet (s) nahm den unerschöpflichen Eifer Usamas wahr und stellte ihn daher in dieser Armee mit auf. Einige Wochen vor seinem Tod ernannte der Prophet (s) Usama zum Kommandanten eines Feldzuges gegen die Römer in Syrien. In der Schlacht von Mu'ta, ebenfalls gegen die Römer, war Usamas Vater, Zaid Ibn Haritha, als Märtyrer gefallen. Während der Vorbereitung des Feldzuges wurde der Prophet (s) jedoch ernsthaft krank und starb. Abu Bakr wurde zum Kalifen gewählt; im jungen islamischen Staat kam Unruhe auf, wodurch sich Usamas Aufbruch um einige Wochen verzögerte. Das Ableben des Propheten (s) brachten einige Leute auf den Gedanken, dass mit seinem Ende auch das Ende des Islam gekommen sei. Viele Stämme waren erst vor kurzer Zeit in den Islam eingetreten und Teil des islamischen Staates geworden. Nicht alle von ihnen waren fest im neuen Glauben. Bei vielen wurden Anzeichen erkennbar, dass sie aus dem islamischen Staat austreten wollten. Abu Bakr sah sich in einer schwierigen Lage. Er, der As-Siddiq genannt wurde, wollte die Befehle und Anweisungen des Propheten um jeden Preis ausführen und den vom Gesandten Allahs (s) geplanten Feldzug gegen die Römer durchführen. Einige Sahaba waren wegen der Unruhen um den jungen islamischen Staat besorgt und waren der Meinung, den Feldzug gegen die Römer zunächst zu unterlassen, bis die Unruhen beseitigt worden sind. Doch Abu Bakr war fest entschlossen und entgegnete ihnen: „Wie kann ich die Flagge einziehen, die der Gesandte Allahs (s) selbst entfaltet hat? Es ist einfach undenkbar!" Andere wiederum wandten ein, dass Usama noch zu unerfahren sei – in der Tat war er noch keine 20 Jahre alt, um den Feldzug zu führen. Es sei klüger, einem erfahreneren Mann das Kommando zu übertragen. Diese Bedenken erregten Abu Bakrs Zorn aufs Äußerste. „Welches Recht habe ich", fragte er, „einen Mann abzusetzen, der vom Gesandten Allahs persönlich ernannt worden ist?" So brach die Expedition unter Usama ungefähr drei Wochen nach dem Tod des Propheten (s) auf. Abu Bakr begleitete Usama ein Stück des Weges. Der junge Befehlshaber war zu Pferde, während der Kalif neben ihm zu Fuß ging. Usama sagte: „O Nachfolger des Gesandten Allahs, nimm doch auch ein Pferd oder erlaube mir, abzusitzen!" „Bei Allah", entgegnete Abu Bakr, „ich stimme keinem der beiden Vorschläge zu. Was macht es schon, wenn meine Füße staubig werden, während ich einige Schritte auf dem Wege Allahs schreite? Jeder Schritt auf dem Wege Allahs wiegt so viel wie 700 gute Taten." Der Kalif bat Usama, Umar (r), der ihm auch unterstellt war, in Medina zu belassen, da er ihn brauchen werde. Usama war einverstanden und kam der Bitte des Kalifen nach. Ehe der Kalif sich von Usama trennte, gab er ihm viele wertvolle Ratschläge, unter anderem: „Sei nicht unehrlich! Täusche niemanden! Verstecke deine Kriegsbeute nicht! Verstümmele niemanden! Töte nicht Frauen, Alte und Kinder! Verbrenne keine Dattelpalmen! Schlage keine Obstbäume um! Schlachte eine Ziege, eine Kuh oder ein Kamel nur als Nahrung! Du wirst Menschen antreffen, die der Welt entsagt und sich in ein Kloster zurückgezogen haben; lass sie in Frieden!" Obwohl es zu keiner direkten Kampfhandlung mit den Römern kam, war Usamas Feldzug sehr erfolgreich. Er drang in die Grenzbezirke Syriens ein und kehrte nach 40 Tagen ohne Verluste nach Medina zurück. Das Unternehmen brachte noch einen weiteren Erfolg. Es öffnete denen die Augen, die glaubten, dass der Islam am Ende sei. Sie erhielten den klaren Beweis dafür, dass der Islam es mit den größten Mächten der damaligen Welt aufnehmen konnte. Dies beeindruckte die schwankenden Stämme. Einige von ihnen, die erst kürzlich vom Islam abgefallen waren, kehrten in die Gemeinschaft der Gläubigen zurück. Usama Ibn Zaid erwarb das Wohlgefallen des Gesandten Allahs (s), möge er auch bei Allah (t) eine entsprechende Stellung einnehmen. Und möge Allah (t) uns rechtleiten und aus der heutigen islamischen Umma derartige islamische Persönlichkeiten hervorbringen, um der Umma und dem Islam jene Stellung wieder zu geben, die ihnen Leute wie Usama Ibn Zaid verschafft haben.
