Ohne den weltoffenen Islam des Mittelalters wäre das kulturelle Erbe der Antike untergegangen. Als verspätete Religion wird der Islam oft bezeichnet, als weniger differenziert und philosophisch untermauert als andere Glaubensrichtungen wie Judentum, Christentum oder Buddhismus. Er gilt sogar als totalitäre Religion, die keine anderen Lehrmeinungen neben sich duldet. Symptomatisch für diese Haltung ist der angebliche Ausspruch des Kalifen Umar bei der Eroberung Alexandrias, als er die weltberühmte Bibliothek der Stadt mit der Begründung verbrennen ließ: "Entweder die Schriften stimmen mit dem Koran überein, dann sind sie überflüssig. Oder sie widersprechen ihm, dann sind sie unerwünscht." Schon diese Worte gelten in der neueren Forschung als kaum glaubhaft. Tatsächlich war der Islam in seiner Blütezeit vom 9. bis 14. Jahrhundert alles andere als rückschrittlich, fanatisch oder intolerant. Nachdem die Araber im Namen Allahs den Nahen Osten, Persien, Nordindien und Nordafrika unterworfen hatten, bildeten sie stabile Reiche, die technologisch, administrativ, wirtschaftlich, vor allem aber wissenschaftlich an der Spitze der Weltzivilisation standen. Besser als die damaligen etablierten Mächte Byzanz, China und Indien, weit vor dem christlichen Westen. Einen ersten Höhepunkt erreichte die islamische Zivilisation schon um 800 unter dem Kalifat der Abbasiden, die ihre Vorfahren bis auf den Onkel des Propheten Mohammed zurückführten. Sie errichteten ein Weltreich von Marokko bis Afghanistan. Der legendäre Kalif Harun al Raschid war Zeitgenosse Karls des Großen, sein Sohn al Mamun gründete das "Haus der Weisheit" in der Hauptstadt Bagdad. Es machte die erste Millionenstadt der Geschichte zum Zentrum der Wissenschaften und Technologie weltweit - ähnlich dem heutigen Silicon Valley oder der Gegend um Boston, wo ein Drittel aller Nobelpreisträger lebt. Große Geister lehrten an dieser ersten Universität des Mittelalters: Geber der Alchemist, wie ihn die Christen später nannten, der Begründer der wissenschaftlichen Chemie, al Kwarizmi, der Mathematiker, der die Algebra als eigenständigen Zweig der Mathematik etablierte und nach dem der Algorithmus benannt ist. Zugleich führte er mit dem Philosophen al Kindi, der ebenfalls in Bagdad unterrichtete, das Dezimalsystem und die Null in die Mathematik ein. Dazu gehört auch al Razi, neben dem Perser Avicenna der bedeutendste Arzt des Mittelalters, der viele Krankheiten und ihre Therapie genau beschrieb und ein Standardwerk verfasste, das viele Jahrhunderte auch im Westen das Maß aller medizinischen Abhandlungen war. Die Reihe ließe sich beliebig fortsetzen. Arabisch wurde damals die Wissenschaftssprache schlechthin. Zuvor hatten die islamischen Gelehrte viele Werke griechischer Autoren - Aristoteles, Ptolemäus, Euklid, Archimedes, Galen, Hippokrates - ins Arabische und Persische übersetzt und so vor dem Untergang bewahrt. Man kann zu Recht sagen, dass ohne die arabische Kultur das Erbe der Antike untergegangen wäre. Weder Byzanz im Osten noch die christlichen Reiche im Westen waren in der Lage, dieses Erbe zu sichern. Al Mamun war nicht nur ein eifriger Förderer der Wissenschaften, er begünstigte auch eine Richtung im Islam, die Vernunft und Religion in Übereinstimmung zu bringen suchte. Es ist die Denkschule der Mutazila, die stets den Rationalismus vor die religiöse Offenbarung stellte. Nur was mit dem Verstand abzuleiten war, galt als wahr. Wenn die Religion dem widersprach, verließen sich die Mutaziliten lieber auf ihre Erkenntnisse. Klar, dass nicht alle Muslime solche Schlussfolgerungen teilten. Aber es gab den Wettstreit der Denkschulen und die großen Debatten. Zugleich führten die arabischen Kalifen und deren Nachfolger, die Sultane der Türken und Ägypter, ein gewisses Maß an Rechtssicherheit ein. Der Kadi war in zivilen und strafrechtlichen Dingen weitgehend unabhängig vom Herrscher, auch wenn der hin und wieder in die Rechtsprechung eingriff. Es entstanden jedenfalls bedeutende Rechtsschulen im Islam - wieder solche, die sich auf Systematik, Vernunft und Logik stützten, und solche, für die der Koran und die Sprüche des Propheten das Maß aller Dinge waren. Die straffe Ordnung des Staates verlieh auch Christen und Juden Schutz. Sie mussten allerdings eine Kopfsteuer zahlen, wenn sie in Ruhe gelassen werden wollten. Das christliche Westeuropa, das die fortschrittlichen Muslime mit zahlreichen Kriegen überzog und ihnen schließlich die Herrschaft im Mittelmeerraum abnahm, war voller Bewunderung für die verfeinerte Kultur des Islams. Eifrig übersetzten die Christen die Werke der Araber ins Latein. Im 13. Jahrhundert vernichteten die Mongolen die blühende Kultur im Nahen Osten - der Beginn eines langen Niedergangs: Am Ende des Mittelalters hatten die Abendländer aufgeholt, in der Renaissance überholten sie die Muslime - wirtschaftlich, politisch und kulturell. Nur das Osmanische Reich der Türken konnte den hohen Standard noch einigermaßen halten und sogar den christlichen Balkan erobern, ehe es ebenfalls verfiel zum "kranken Mann am Bosporus". Die Religion mag zum Niedergang beigetragen haben, weil die Geistlichen die heiligen Schriften immer rigider auslegten, die rationalistischen Denkschulen verfolgten und die Beschäftigung mit Philosophie und Wissenschaft als gottlos verdammten, während sich in Europa diese gerade von der Kirche emanzipierten. Der Verlust der Innovationskraft ging einher mit dem wirtschaftlichen Verfall. Wenn überall Denkverbote Einzug halten, verlieren die Menschen auch den Anreiz, sich wirtschaftlich zu verbessern. Sie folgen nur noch ihren Clan-Chefs. Die Moderne hat die rückständigen Länder des Islam überrascht. Ob konservativ oder radikal-islamisch: Eine Antwort ist noch nicht gefunden.
