We had a few new volunteers enthusiastic to get involved, and some of the old hands, who helped set the project up back to make sure it's running with the original vision intact. It was a busy evening, with more demand than usual. On the one hand it's pleasing to help so many vulnerable people, but on the other, it's saddening to see so many people in that position. I had an opportunity to speak to one of the regulars who attends every week. He spoke of the nearby Barnardo's being closed for refurbishment and the struggles he and people in his position have had to endure just to secure a hot meal in the evening. Being at Soup & Smiles gives us the chance to hear these stories from people who, to a large extent, feel marginalised and ignored by society. It brings home the reality of life on the streets for so many, and it is a humbling experience. We'll be back again |
