    Er warf seine Forschung hin und widmet sich nun ausschließlich deren Vernetzung. Ijad Madisch hat Researchgate aufgebaut, eine Art Facebook für Forscher. Madisch, ein junger Mann von 33 Jahren, dessen schwarzes Haar bereits zurückweicht, musste einst das Urteil seines Chefs am Uniklinikum ignorieren: Schlagen Sie sich den Firlefanz aus dem Kopf. Wissenschaftler sind nicht sozial. Die wollen sich nicht vernetzen. „Dem Dr. Firlefanz bin ich jetzt natürlich sehr dankbar", sagt Madisch heute. Denn daraufhin kündigte er.

    Madisch, enthusiastisch, mehr sprudelnd als redend und durch und durch von sich selbst überzeugt, ist ein klassischer Repräsentant der risikofreudigen Start-up-Welt. Der Sohn syrischer Eltern sitzt auf einem Sofa in einem Altbaubüro in Berlin-Mitte, neben sich eine zerknüllte, grüne Fleecedecke. Mitarbeiter halten hier sonst ein Nickerchen, regenerieren ihre kreativen Köpfe. Sie essen auch gratis in der Kantine, es gibt Räume, in denen kann man Tischtennis, Kicker und Billard spielen – das Vorbild Google ist unverkennbar.

    Mehr als vier Millionen Mitglieder hat Researchgate, täglich kommen um die 10.000 hinzu. Das zeigt: Wissenschaftler sind doch sozial. Sie laden auf Researchgate Profile und Publikationen hoch, teilen Ergebnisse und reden miteinander.

    Zum Gründer machte den 2007 in Harvard forschenden Virologen und studierten Informatiker Madisch der eigene Frust: Ein Experiment wollte und wollte nicht klappen. „Ich war mir sicher, dass andere dieses Problem auch schon hatten. Aber Experimente, die nicht funktionieren, werden in der Regel nicht veröffentlicht", sagt Madisch. So verschwenden ganze Forschergenerationen ihre Zeit.

    Mehr Zuspruch als in Deutschland fand er für seine Idee in den USA. Ein Professor an der Harvard Medical School gab ihm eine Teilzeitstelle, er sollte sich parallel um den Aufbau der Plattform kümmern. „Die Zeitverteilung war dann eher 99 zu eins für Researchgate. Der Prof wartet immer noch auf meine Papers", gesteht Madisch. Und auch Investoren interessierten sich rasch für den deutschen Wissenschaftler. Der einflussreiche Risikokapitalgeber Matt Cohler fragte ihn, was sein Ziel sei, und Madisch gab die richtige Antwort: der Nobelpreis.

    Im Valley kommen Leute, deren Ambitionen übers Geldverdienen hinausgehen, gut an. Auch Bill Gates hat investiert. Doch als Standort hat Madisch sich Berlin ausgesucht. Das Ökosystem für Start-ups sei gut in der deutschen Hauptstadt, meint er. Es gibt reichlich intelligente, gut ausgebildete Leute, um endlich ein Unternehmen hervorzubringen, das ein „Game Changer" wird.
    Researchgate ist offen für Firmen

    Egal welche Industrie: Software sticht für ihn Hardware. Fassungslos ist er, dass Mercedes sich brüstete, das Navigations- und Musiksystem von Apple integriert zu haben. „Das kann deren Ende sein! All die Daten, die Apple bekommt!" Die klassischen Dax-Konzerne stellen doch nur so Dinge her.

    Dabei würde Madisch gern auch Konzerne auf Researchgate locken. Pharmaunternehmen könnten ihre abgeschotteten Forschungsabteilungen öffnen und schneller neue Medikamente entwickeln. Den Willen zur echten Transformation sieht er in der Old Economy noch nicht. Aber mit deren Problemen hält er sich nicht zu sehr auf: „Ich bin froh, dass ich diese Suppe nicht auslöffeln muss."
