Sie protestieren damit gegen eine sogenannte Ausreisesteuer und die Tötung eines Demonstranten bei Protesten gegen diese Abgabe. Am Wochenende war es in der Stadt Dahibah zu schweren Zusammenstößen zwischen Demonstranten und Sicherheitskräften gekommen. Die Ausreisesteuer hat den Handel in der Grenzregion zu Libyen fast zum Erliegen gebracht. "Wir sind uns bewusst, dass diese Regionen lange Zeit an den Rand gedrängt wurden", so der Gouverneur von Tataouine, Saber Mednini. "Und dass die Menschen in Dahibah besonders vom Handel mit Libyen leben. Als diese verstanden, dass das Gesetz für sie gilt, waren sie sehr verunsichert wegen der Steuer." Die am Freitag eingesetzte neue tunesische Regierung versprach, sich um die Menschen in der betroffenen Region kümmern zu wollen. So soll die Ausreisesteuer noch einmal auf den Prüfstand gestellt werden. Zudem soll eine Kommission den Tod des Demonstranten untersuchen.
